With the school year over for many and winding down for the rest, it’s time to start thinking about Summer Camp!  I remember attending camp as a kid and, while I remember feeling a bit homesick, it was a really great experience overall.  One thing that really helped was “mail call”.  After lunch each day, the entire camp would gather round and the camp leaders would have a big basket with mail and packages that parents and loved ones had sent.  On the days where I received something special, I forgot about being homesick and was filled with joy.  So now that we have two kids heading to extended sleep-away camp this year for the first time, I couldn’t wait to find some goodies for them.

Sending a big thank you to Peaceable Kingdom for these camp goodies!

One thing that I thought I’d pack with our kids is a journal.  Our 12 year old daughter especially loves to talk about, write, and document experiences and thoughts and I though one of the Peaceable Kingdom Guided Journals would be perfect for her.  Filled with a variety of guided prompts and fun activities throughout every page, kids will enjoy reflecting on their adventures and be able to revisit their thoughts over and over again in this memorable keepsake.

Whether mailing a postcard to your camper or your camper sending one home, these Brightly Colored Fun Postcards are a perfect choice.  Kids will light up with joy as they share their days in a little note to home and these cheerful, bold post cards are so much fun.  I have been looking for fun post cards for the past month all over town and came up empty handed every time so I’m thrilled that Peaceable Kingdom has stepped up to the plate with these great choices.

Our kids will be heading to camp on a Sunday afternoon in June, shortly after lunch.  That first day is packed with getting to know their cabin mates and other scheduled activities and ice breakers so I don’t think they’ll start thinking about home until the next day.  So for Monday Mail Call Day, I’m excited to pack up a surprise for each of the kids: a letter from home and a fun pack of Peaceable Kingdom Playing Cards!  This will give them something fun to do if they are bored during free time as well as encourage them to make new friends by inviting other kids to play along.

The camp we send the kids to actually has parents bring their “mail” to drop off and secretly place in baskets for the specific days they want the letters and packages delivered.  I think this is genius as it takes away relying on the post office to deliver in a timely matter.  So for the following days of our kids’ camp stay, I plan to have grandparents and an aunt writing letters so the kids will get to “hear” from someone new each day as well as have the opportunity to write them back with their fun post card set.

Tell me.  Are you sending your kids to camp this year?  What do you do to help ensure they have a great time and manage the homesickness?
