Thank you to Fiskars for providing me with a Reel mower in exchange for review purposes. All opinions belong to me.
As the runner of the household, I make a lot of decisions for our home. One of the main choices I try to make often is reducing our carbon footprint and choosing more eco friendly options where ever I can. We don’t buy paper kitchen products or plastic kitchen products and do our best to use reusable at every possible opportunity.
An area we had yet to reduce is our lawn care. We intentionally are careful about what goes on our garden, and our lawn but hadn’t yet made the step to reduce the impact our lawn mower was making on the planet.
Now, normally I know when people hear the word reel mower they think about the systems that their grandparents or great grandparents used to talk about. With all of our new technology we no longer need to fret when thinking about a reel mower.
Fiskars has developed the StaySharp Max Reel Mower and trust me when I say it’s amazing. Assembly was super simple. The height adjustment is something I always seriously struggled with and gave up on our regular push mower. On the Fiskars Reel mower, I could easily adjust the height with one hand absolutely no resistance. The blades are developed to better use inertia and not jam up in thicker more dense grass patches. The amount of force it takes to get this mower to move is very similar to a regular push mower if not easier. The blades one the StaySharp Max Reel Mower are designed to do just that, stay sharp, and without needed annual sharpening.
So how did it cut? Well, when I first opened the box and easily assembled the mower my grass was almost near the 6 inch limit of not being able to mow. That first pass did take some effort in some patches. After having cut it down to an appropriate length that first time, each time after ( about every 3-4 days depending on rain) has been an absolute breeze.

My mom is in her fifties and was absolutely blown away by how easy the StaySharp Max Reel Mower was to operate, she said it was nothing like the dreaded contraption of her childhood.
Besides no longer adding to our carbon footprint the Fiskars StaySharp Reel Mower also as improved the health of our lawn. No longer is the grass tips getting shredded and yellow with damage from being hit with the regular dull mower blades but simply cut with sharp blades from the reel mower. I love the way our grass looks after it’s cut and I take great satisfaction that mowing my lawn didn’t cause any more environmental harm!

This might be the answer I need. We have a push mower for the areas that the riding mower wont get to . This looks like something I can handle. Thank you for the review.

I just wish I had a lawn to mow so I could use this lawn mower. We’ve tried a lawn before, but the sand would just blow over the top of it.

This sounds like an amazing reel mower! I have always wanted to try one, but have been afraid that they just don’t do that good of a job cutting. After reading your awesome review however, I am definitely considering buying one now! 🙂 Thanks for sharing.

I remember using a reel mower at my Aunts house. They had a rather small lawn and it was still a toughie. I have been looking at exactly this mower from Fiskars.. and this looks terrific. I hadnt met anyone who used it though and had been hesitant. I might have to take the plunge! I do know lawnmowers are terribly inefficient and the carbon emissions are horrid.
I also really like the way this looks! -
We tried a reel mower that looked more like the old fashioned ones, and my husban hated it. I wonder if this would do a better job. One nice thing about a reel mower is there’s no annoying mower sound. I hate the constant sound of a lawnmower from someone mowing their lawn!

When you are already working your rows in a steady, even pace, make sure you overlap part of the row that you have already mowed. This makes your mower a lot lighter to push because part of the row had already been mowed. This will also give you the chance to mow spots that you might have missed.

you’ve got the handle upside down by the way, you should flip it to get a better cut 🙂
That’s a pretty nice mower! One more benefit from a rotary mower is the exercise you get from mowing- a lot more than from using an electric or gas powered mower!
