Sleeping Bear Press publishes beautiful books for young readers. For almost 20 years, Sleeping Bear Press has been committed to publishing books that “enrich children’s lives through stories that blend entertaining text with educational content.” Their stories are beautifully illustrated, wonderfully written, and rich in content. Many of the Sleeping Bear Press titles have won awards.
For my review, I received four books from Sleeping Bear Press- Miss Colfax’s Light, The Last Brother: A Civil War Tale, Horace: Secret of Scarab Beetle and Horace j. Edwards and the Time Keepers: The Search for the Lost Prophecy.
Miss Colfax’s Light is set in 1861 at a Michigan City lighthouse off Lake Michigan. Harriet Colfax is 37 years old. She is the keeper of the lighthouse. For 43 years, it was Harriet’s job to maintain the lighthouse, through rough weather and changing technology. This is a true story about Harriet and her commitment to the lighthouse and her adventurous life.
The Last Brother: A Civil War Tale is a story told by a young boy during The Battle of Gettysburg. Gabe is an 11-year-old bugler in the Union Army. Gabe takes his job seriously. He and other buglers have the task of learning over 60 different battle calls. While doing his job, Gabe also watches over his older brother Davy who is a foot soldier. During the battle, Gabe meets another young bugler, who fights for the other side. As they form an unlikely friendship, Gabe is faced with tough decisions…must he choose between service to his country, to kin or to a friend?
I chose Miss Light and The Last Brother: A Civil War Tale for my eight-year-old daughter. She enjoys reading but struggles to find subjects she really enjoys. Last summer, we visited Gettysburg. She seemed to really enjoy learning about the history of it all. Since then, I have paid closer attention to what she gravitates towards. I am noticing that she enjoy the stories behind a lot of things. She seems to like hearing about the history and the “why” behind things. I think she will really enjoy both of those books and the rich historical content.
Horace: Secret of Scarab Beetle and Horace j. Edwards and the Time Keepers: The Search for the Lost Prophecy is a series about 11-year-old Horace J. Edwards. Horace is an ordinary boy who recently moved to Michigan. On Horace’s first day of sixth grade, he noticed mysterious things start to happen. In the first book, Horace’s grandfather dies and leaves him a strange gift, a scarab beetle. Horace believes there is more to the story, he works to uncover the secrets surrounding his grandfather’s death and the beetle. During the second book, Horace continues to search for answers but uncovers more questions in the process.
I selected the Horace J. Edwards books for my ten-year-old daughter. She loves mystery books. I think this series will be right up her alley. I can already imagine her running in to tell me about the latest discovery!

Hello, my name is Laurie. My family and I live near the Oregon coast. When we aren’t at work, in school, or on the volleyball court, we enjoy traveling, cheering for our favorite sports teams, playing outdoors, and checking off items on our bucket list. We are lucky in that both sets of our parents, as well as our siblings and their families, live within an hour of us. We get together often to help one another out, celebrate milestones, and go on adventures together.

I just love how much she loves to read. These might be a little too old for them right now but might as well enter for the future. These books look very cute!
