I love crafting. Well, when I have the time that is! I love that this craft is quick, easy, and the final product is useful.

I’ll give you the step by step process (with pictures!) to show you how to make these up-cycled gift tags.

You’ll need the following supplies:
Old greeting cards – Christmas cards, birthday cards, cards from other holidays – any will do
Scissors or other cutting tool
Corner croppers
Hole Punch

Begin by choosing a card and cutting off the side with the writing on it. Next, cut the side with the picture on it into as many pieces as you wish. Make sure that the back side is blank and does not have any writing on it, as you will need to use the back/blank side to write the recipient’s name. In my experience, a large greeting card can make anywhere from two to nine gift tags.

Next, use a corner cutter to crop the edges of each tag. You could skip this step if you like square or rectangular gift tags, but I think they look a little more polished with the corners rounded or scalloped.

Next, choose a corner (or the center of the top) and punch a hole. This will be the area where you can put a string or ribbon through to attach the gift tag to your present. Tip: make sure you do not punch the hole too close to the edge or your tag or string may rip out.

You are done! It’s as easy as that! Above you can see all of the Christmas cards from this year that I recycled. I love the different colors and sizes you can get. You will find you have something to coordinate with many different colors of gift wrap and bags.

What do you think? Is this a craft you would like to try? Feel free to pin it on Pinterest to save this idea!

This is such a cute idea! I like to recycle and with that in mind, this is the perfect craft . Also, the kids would like helping out on this activity.

We’ve just torn off the front of cards and written on them for future gift tags. I love the finished looks of these and will be looking for the tool that rounds corners!

  • That is just brilliant. Now all I need is more friends to send me cards!

That’s a very clever idea. Have to remember to do it. Now where did I put those cards???

I have done this before, and it works really well! I feel so bad not reusing some of he cards as really they are so cute ! These are a great way to reuse the old cards, and along he way remember or reread sentiments in them (thats what I did at least) It’s a clever idea and the card stock is usually a nice weight.

Wow, what a fantastic way to recycle greeting cards! Some of them are so cute, so what not use them as gift tags! Thank you so much for the great idea. 🙂

Memories! YEARS ago I had my nieces involved in crafts and they loved doing it. Starting in November they would spend at least one night a week with me. Making all kind of gifts for family and friends. After all gifts were dry and ready to wrap we made gift cards from old cards that I saved. Each girl would make at least 10 gifts and they were so excited about giving their gifts.
