Thank you to Baker Creek for providing me with products to facilitate my blog review. All opinions are 100% my own.
During the long, cold, dark, and wet winter days, I begin dreaming about planting our spring/summer garden. Living in the Oregon coast range means we only have two or three months of growing time. I do all my prep work in advance so that I don’t waste any precious growing time. I get out my Baker Creek heirloom garden seed catalog and research the vegetable varieties we want to plant that year. Some of them are old favorites and others are new to us.
This year, I chose to plant-
Anaheim Peppers
Zucchini Black Beauty Squash
Oregon Sugar Pod Snow Peas
Abe Lincoln Original Tomatoes
Muncher Cucumbers
Old Homestead Beans
Romanesco Italia Broccoli
Southport Red Globe Onions
Red Wing Lettuce Mix Salad Blend
Chocolate Beauty Peppers
Sweet Passion Melons
Sugar Baby Bush Watermelons
Purple of Sicily Cauliflower
Amarillo Carrots
Vegetable Spaghetti Squash
Art Verell’s Sweet Corn
We had a cooler than normal summer. Still, most of these vegetables did great. I was blown away by the Old Homestead Beans. When they were young stars, they got attacked by cucumber beetles. I set out yellow sticky traps and removed by hand as many of the beetles as I could. My beginners garden group told me that once the beetles had landed on the plants they would leave behind a bacteria that would eventually kill the plant. They suggested I pull all of the starts and try again. I was running out of time so, I decided to leave the plants to see if what they said was true. Boy, am I glad I did! After about a month, the Old Homestead Beans took off! I have more beans than I know what to do with. I have enough canned dilly beans and frozen beans to feed the whole neighborhood this winter. I love it! Speaking of preserving food, I have also been able to bake and freeze several loaves of zucchini bread and have a bunch of dehydrated/sun-dried tomatoes in the freezer.

Hello, my name is Laurie. My family and I live near the Oregon coast. When we aren’t at work, in school, or on the volleyball court, we enjoy traveling, cheering for our favorite sports teams, playing outdoors, and checking off items on our bucket list. We are lucky in that both sets of our parents, as well as our siblings and their families, live within an hour of us. We get together often to help one another out, celebrate milestones, and go on adventures together.

All of that looks so good. I wish my garden attempts were half that good.

That tomato looks awesome. I should try heirloom seeds. Thanks for posting!
