Thank you to Ubtech for providing me with product in exchange for review purposes. All opinions are my own.
My son has loved robots for a long time, where that love came from I can’t quite place. I do however remember some of the first robots he enjoyed weren’t really toys, more drawings or cartoon versions he seen. That grew into a paper robot book that let you assemble the bots and read a short story about their fictional purpose, life and personality. I would say when my son started dabbling in those tiny plastic bricks we all know of his robotics love grew at an increasing rate. He now was able to build any robot he could think of and create his own story and personality to pair alongside the build.
Later he began to take a robotics class within our homeschool partnership and understood more and more about the capabilities of these builds.
Ubtech is a company who understands the love for robots in people both young and old. The glow that emits from not only creating a robot but also being able to program it, tell it what to do, when and how is so profound!
My son received an
Overdrive Builder Bot series kit from Ubtech. My son has loved construction even lower than he’s loved robots so we knew this would be the perfect kit for him. This kit allows you not only to build a dump truck style robot called Dozerbot but also a Dirtbot.
We sat down and decided that it would be best if we built both of these two builds before moving onto creating a robot from his imagination that way we could better understand how the sensors, motors and building pieces themselves worked and communicated with each other.
My son has a pretty long attention span for something he’s genuinely interested in and if I allowed I think he would build all day long continuously on the overdrive kit. We quickly realized that some of the pieces were familiar to him from other robot kits except sized differently. He was able to follow along in the in app build instructions quite easily, figuring his way around the app itself also pretty easily.
While he has asked for a bit of help here and there due to some reading needs that he found difficult, or a piece being a bit difficult to arrange just right, he has stuck with the build religiously enjoying and learning quite a lot along the way. He is so excited to have a robot that can really lift things up, push, pull and dump things as well. He can’t wait to finish each robot and play with them around the house, doing small “jobs” and pulling pranks on mom and dad with them.
We haven’t gotten to the finish of the build or to the controlling portion just yet as we are dealing with a bit of trouble with the app/app system requirements and our device at the moment. Overall we have really liked the ease of use of the pieces within the Ubtech kit.
If you have a younger kid or older kid interested in robots, science, or engineering
Ubtech has the perfect gift for them this holiday season!
I am a stay at home mother of two, who loves to create in every form, from cooking, to henna, to painting or sculpting, creating with my hands is my passion! I love to dance and let loose when the music flows right. Being outside is a special kind of therapy I think humans need more of as well as mindfulness! I love all things new and adventurous and am always looking to experience more of life 🙂
