Side Sleeper’s Favorite Pillow

In 2019 I did a review with Honeydew for their side-sleeper pillow. What’s most unique about the Honeydew side-sleeper pillows is their shape. They’re not a full rectangle, but instead have a curved portion on one end. When I used to sleep with rectangular pillows while sleeping on my side, it often felt like my shoulder (and even sort of my neck where it meets my shoulder) were wrestling against the pillow. I had to try to squeeze the pillow between my shoulder and my head, or I had to sleep with only part of my head on the pillow. 

The curved lower portion of the Honeydew side sleeper pillow just is shaped to make more sense for the side sleeping pillow.

In that first review, I also talked about how I found that I like to use this pillow in multiple positions. Most of the time I just sleep with it flat, with the curved portion closest to me, as the design intends. 

However, I sometimes like to sort of cuddle the pillow, by placing the curved portion against my chest, and using one of the longer edges under my head. Thanks to the curved underside, I ca lay with the pillow that way and the curved edge still supports enough of my head that it feels comfortable.

I really liked this pillow back in late 2019, feel free to check out my old Honeydew Side Sleeper Pillow review from back then. and I had still been regularly using that same pillow until recently. So, I thought it was about time for a new pillow, not because the old one was in bad shape or anything, but just because I believe in replacing pillows at least every couple of years. 

When I visited the Honeydew website, I saw that they are now offering “extra fill” that you can buy separately. This made me extra excited because I stated in that first review that the only thing keeping this pillow from being 100% perfect for me was I wished it was a little bit thicker. These pillows are designed to let you customize how full they are, so I knew that I could open the pillow and remove stuffing if I wanted…but it had arrived a bit less full than I would prefer. Now that you can purchase additional fill, I thought this would make for a truly perfect pillow for me. Edit – I actually misunderstood the entire time! They do now sell extra fill, but they have always been willing to send extra fill for those who have purchased a pillow. I just didn’t realize it until I saw the fill listing. So if you’re purchasing a Honeydew pillow already, you can ask them to send you extra fill without paying extra. They just also offer the bags of fill as extra bags for people who may want to use it or other purposes, like using it for sewing/craft projects. 

Honeydew Scrumptious Side Sleeper Pillow Review

I was sent a new Scrumptious side sleeper pillow. It’s the same shape and soft-yet-supportive pillow that I had from almost 2 years ago. The only difference was the design of the exterior of the cover has changed slightly. It now has a repeating diamond design, while my pillow from 2019 had different lines sewn onto it. It’s such a great mix of supportive yet soft, and the design is truly perfect for side sleepers. 

I the pictures here, the old version (on top) looks bigger than the new pillow. I’m not really sure why the photo makes it seem that way, it must have been the angle the photo was taken at or something? I must have been standing closer to the top pillow, making it look larger? I didn’t notice that until editing the picture for this post, and I still have the old pillow so I stacked them on top of each other to ‘measure’ them and they are the same size. 

The extra fill comes in a zip-type bag and you can request it for free when purchasing a pillow from Honeydew, or reach out to them if you purchase a pillow and realize later that you’d like to be fuller. Or, if you just love their fill and want to get crafty with it (such as making couch pillows or something) you can buy their bags of fill for $9.95 each. The bag doesn’t look all that big when it arrives, but the appearance is a bit deceptive. I pulled out multiple fistfuls of the fill and added them to my pillow. Then when I went to look at the bag again, it somehow looked like it was still full! It had originally been so stuffed full of filling that I was able to remove multiple handfuls and the remaining fill just repositioned within the bag, leaving it still looking full. My point being, they send a pretty generous amount of extra fill. I was surprised at how a few fistfuls of fill make a noticeable difference in the firmness and thickness of the pillow, too. I can’t imagine anyone wanting more extra filling than what is provided in that bag. So if you’re like me and like a thicker pillow, just request an extra fill bag with your purchase! 

I use the side sleeper pillowcase with it, too. I have naturally wavy hair and am a bit of a hair care fanatic, so I used to sleep on satin as satin or silk are said to be the best for reducing frizz in hair and reducing hair breakage. The pillowcases from Honeydew are made from bamboo, but it doesn’t cause me frizz or breakage. The material is really sleek, almost slightly silky despite being bamboo. It doesn’t get as cold as silk does, and it seems to be as soft (or softer?) than cotton, and breathable, too. So, I love that it works well for my hair, plus bamboo is eco-friendly because it grows really rapidly.  

I’ve been absolutely loving this replacement of my old Honeydew Scrumptious side sleeper pillow.  If you know a side sleeper, I think this would make an awesome gift for them. I can be frugal in a lot of cases, so a $99 pillow would typically feel like a bit of a splurge for me…but I truly love this pillow and think it’s well worth the price. Plus, it’s made by a family company in California, so it’s a company I feel great about supporting! Getting a comfortable, restful sleep is pretty high up on my list of favorite things, as I know it is for SO many others…maybe especially now when so many have felt really stressed the last 20+ months. Anyway, I truly believe a lot of people would really appreciate a Honeydew side sleeper pillow this holiday season!
