Kuhn Rikon new life frying pan and smart lid

Kuhn Rikon sent me products for review. All opinions are my own.

One of the purchasing decisions that I find challenging is cookware. Especially frying pans. Since becoming an adult, I’ve had several times in my life where I knew I wanted to replace a pan or two, so I started trying to research and quickly became overwhelmed. There are so many strong opinions out there about what materials are best. In the past, I’ve tried a few different materials based on the advice of others that I have now decided just aren’t for me.

I had a ceramic frying pan and lid set that I liked when I first got it, but it hasn’t held up well at all. It used to have non-stick coating but it now sticks like crazy and is really hard to clean. I needed to replace it.

Kuhn rikon new life frying pan review

The Kuhn Rikon New Life Frying Pan stood out to me for a few reasons. I’ve used aluminum cookware before, and liked how it’s not as heavy as many other materials. The only issue I’ve had with aluminum is that some aluminum cookware is so thin that it can warp over time. I liked how Kuhn Rikon pans looked thicker and sturdier than other aluminum cookware I’ve owned before.

I also liked how it was recycled. Yes, these pans are made of 100% recycled aluminum! They can contain old aluminum soda cans, bicycles and factory waste. I love knowing that the pan is made from items that could have ended up in a landfill but were saved and given a new life instead.

I thought from the online listing that the new life frying pan looked thick and sturdy, but I was still pleasantly surprised to see it in person. It’s definitely thicker and more sturdy feeling than other aluminum cookware I’ve owned in the past. Aluminum is a great material for absorbing, storing and spreading heat which makes it an efficient material to use in cookware.

The pan has a nonstick coating on the surface so you can cook with less fat. The pan can handle up to 464 degrees on stovetop or in the oven.

I was sent the 11 inch pan size which is the size I like to use when cooking pasta dishes on the stove. The edges on this pan are less flared than some pans I’ve owned in the past. I like pans that have fairly tight edges rather than being more flared when making pasta dishes or anything that requires much water. I just find it less messy to keep watery meals in the pan when the edges are closer to a 90 degree angle rather than really curved/flared.

I’ve used this pan for a few of our regular meals and it’s worked great. The brand says it can be put in the dishwasher, but handwashing is recommended. I handwash all of our cookware just to be safe. I’ve even noticed that it leaves more oil in the food than I’m used to. I think this is due to the non-stick surface working so well that the oil doesn’t absorb into the pan at all, it stays in the dish. So, I’ll have to adjust that a bit but I’m loving how effective the nonstick surface is. This pan comes in three sizes and I’d love to own them eventually, too! This is definitely my favorite pan at the moment.

Kuhn rikon smart lid review

I was also sent the Kuhn Rikon smart lid. I love this thing! It is a lid that is designed to fit pans that are 9 to 11 inches in diameter. The center is glass but the outer rim is silicone and it has multiple ridges so it can get a good fit on most any pan within that 9-11 inch size. It’s called a smart lid because it has a valve on the top that you can slide between “off” and “auto” positions. If left off, this will steam your food. If turned to auto, it will automatically release steam as needed which will allow you to fry your foods.

The option to let steam out (or not) is really convenient, and so is the fact that this lid is designed to fit so many different pans. I can use this on other pans I have that didn’t come with lids which is really nice.

I’ve been really happy with both Kuhn Rikon products. I definitely see myself purchasing from this brand in the future!
