As someone who tends to sleep warm, I’m always on the hunt for mattresses that won’t cause me to overheat at night. So when the bed-in-a-box brand Layla offered to send me their new Essential Mattress to try, I was excited to put it to the test!
This mattress features a simple two-layer foam design. The top comfort layer is Layla’s proprietary Open Cell+ cooling memory foam. Underneath is a firmer base foam for support. The entire mattress is enclosed in a soft hexagon-stitched cover that zips off for easy washing.
I’m happy to report that the Essential Mattress has been keeping me cool and comfortable! Unboxing was a breeze – it fully expanded in no time. The Open Cell+ foam definitely lives up to its cooling claims. I never feel hot or sweaty sleeping on this mattress, even though we were still having some 80+ degree days when this mattress first arrived a few weeks ago.
The medium-firm feel hits the sweet spot for my preferences. I like that it contours gently to relieve pressure points but still provides enough support that I don’t sink in too deeply. The foam gives just the right amount to cradle my body’s natural curves. I’m a side and belly sleeper and find this mattress comfortable in both positions.
My partner Ryan agrees that the firmness is ideal. We had some issues with our old mattress developing soft spots that threw off the support. But this Essential Mattress has maintained an even, consistent medium feel without any indentations. I think the durable foams will hold up nicely over time.
One of my favorite things about the Layla Essential Mattress is how well sheets stay in place! Since it’s a slimmer, 9-inch profile, you don’t get that sagging at the edges like on thicker mattresses. Fitted sheets wrap smoothly around the perimeter and don’t budge at night. Despite this mattress being a couple inches thinner than our old mattresses, it’s just as comfortable. So, I see no reason for needing a thicker mattress!
I also love that I can remove and wash the hexagon cover as needed to keep things fresh. Having a removable, washable outer cover is so important to me. Mattress protectors help of course, but it’s nice to be able to clean the actual mattress fabric too. The soft hexagon stitching feels wonderful against the skin as well.
While it’s only been a couple months so far, I’m really impressed with how the Layla Essential Mattress is holding up. The quality and comfort rival more expensive mattresses in my opinion. The foam has maintained its supportive shape with no indentations. And the cooling properties keep me sleeping soundly all night long with no night sweats.
One of the things that drew me to Layla is their dedication to using certified safe, eco-friendly foams. As someone who likes to choose natural and non-toxic household products when possible, I appreciate that the foams are CertiPUR-US certified. And it’s manufactured right here in the USA.
