Our family started a nightly tradition several years ago that we’ve been pretty steadfast about keeping. Each evening we sit down as a family, (if any of the kids are missing, we still try to do this with whoever is home), and we do several things. First off, we read a chapter in the Bible. We’ve read through the entire Bible together already and are back in the Old Testament again this year. Second, we pray as a family. And third, we do a ‘family hug line’. — As author and family therapist Virginia Satir once said, “We need four hugs a day for survival. We need eight hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth”.
Our youngest is 1 1/2 and she LOVES our evening routine. She’s made it her job to bring all our Bibles to the owner. Then she likes to stack them up once done. For prayer time, she’s the first to circle up. And when it comes to the hugs, she shouts with joy and hollers ‘hug line’ at this point. It’s so cute to see! What this looks like is we all line up from oldest to youngest and the youngest starts first, giving everyone a hug. Then the next youngest goes down the line. And so on. So everyone gets a hug from everyone in the family.
Off and on, we’ve added some extras to our routine but have always kept those three main points. Some of the additions have been a quick game. Sometimes that’s a couple rounds of charades, sometimes it’s a quick game of ‘Out Of The Loop’. For awhile, we quizzed each other on the state capitals and that was always fun to see who could remember the most.

Immediately, I noticed how beautiful this book is. It’s hardcover, which I love. I appreciate how it’s loaded with tons of great info, yet isn’t huge and bulky.
