Finding Great Gifts For The Picky Preteen
As kids transition into those tween years, finding gifts they truly want can feel like an impossible task. Preteens start developing stronger opinions and personal tastes, making them seem pickier and harder to please than ever before. They’re playing with toys less and less, but aren’t yet old enough for stereotypical teen gifts. My go-to gift ideas for preteens are to focus on gifts for their bedroom.
For preteens, a bedroom is much more than just a place to sleep. It’s a hangout spot, a personal oasis, and a way to express their emerging individuality and independence. Giving gifts that allow them to redesign and customize their bedroom is a brilliant approach for winning over picky preteens.
A new, larger mattress is the perfect foundational gift for a bedroom makeover. Graduating from a twin to a full or queen size gives them valuable extra space to lounge, read, watch videos, and most importantly – sleep comfortably through those growth spurts. Choosing a quality mattress with proper back support and pressure relief promotes healthy sleep habits. I recently helped my preteen niece upgrade to a full sized mattress from Minocasa, but I’ll share more on that later.
Don’t worry if you aren’t in the market to gift the preteen in your life a mattress. For aunts, uncles, grandparents and others looking for lower-ticket items, bedroom items are still a great go-to. To really wow them, create a “design your dream space” gift experience. You could even get together with other family members so that everyone contributes a little bit to assisting with a bedroom makeover for the preteen. Maybe the parents buy the mattress, while the aunts, uncles and grandparents buy gift cards to let the tween shop for bedroom upgrades like their perfect new bed set, curtains, pillows and any other soft goods to coordinate their refreshed retreat. You can write in the gift card “For a new bedding set!” or “for new bedroom wall decor!” or similar. This lets them steer the style, letting you off the hook for having to know exactly what they want, while still pointing them towards a specific type of purchase to make.
Complement the new bedding with trendy decor pieces like string lights, neon signs, fun lamps or disco balls. A full-length mirror is a must for some girls, along with wall art or photo displays showcasing their interests and aesthetic. For hanging photos, gift an old-school instant camera that prints sticky-backed shots. Plush lounging pillows, hangout seating like a futon, or papasan chair, and a coordinating Bluetooth speaker for streaming music will transform their room into a tween-approved hangout haven.
For ultimate cool points, create a cozy reading nook nook with floor pillows, beanbags, a plush rug and fun low lighting. Install trendy peel-and-stick removable wallpaper for an accent wall, or paint one wall with chalkboard or magnetic primer for an ever-changing display space. Add sleek shelving or storage cubbies to keep clutter at bay. With a few accessories like fake ivy, twinkle lights, and fun gadget charging stations, you’ll have an envy-inducing hideaway.
Minocasa Mino Zero Mattress Review
My niece Kelsie recently experienced this dream bedroom glow-up, receiving the premium Mino Zero mattress from Minocasa for her new full-size bed setup. This all-foam mattress features layers of zero pressure and memory foam, with a patented 7-zone ergonomic support system that aligns the spine. Kelsie adores the “crazy comfortable” plushness combined with underlying support. As an eco-friendly bonus, the breathable Tencel cover is OEKO-TEX certified.
Once she had the mattress foundation, Kelsie got to pick out some new bedding and curtains to update her room with as well. Back at Christmas, she had requested a vanity as her big Christmas gift and that’s in her bedroom as well. So, now she’s further along with her bedroom makeover!
When gifting a picky preteen, few things thrill them more than getting to completely overhaul and redesign their personal space. By giving the gift of a stylish new mattress + the freedom to coordinate all the accompanying decor, you’re sure to solidify your gift-giving legend status. It shows you respect their changing needs and trust their budding sense of identity. Most importantly, you’re creating a relaxing retreat where they can rest, recharge, and ride out the roller coaster of adolescence.
