I learned about suit rentals when preparing for my junior prom. I knew that girls and women usually bought dresses for special occasions, even if they knew they’d only wear the dress once, such as a bridesmaids dress. I guess I just assumed men did the same with their suits. 

I was kind of confused when I realized that renting was the norm. I could see how a guy might not want to purchase a suit vest or pocket square if they were in a certain color to match their prom dress, or to match the bridesmaids dresses at a wedding. Most of the suit could easily be re-used though! Especially if they were going with a classic color like black. So why rent? Especially when renting usually costs about what buying a suit costs. 

Despite my confusion, we did go ahead and rent a suit for Ryan for my junior and senior proms. Both times, I was kind of disappointed with how the rented suit fit. I thought if we bought a suit, he could have it custom-tailored to him, at least.

SuitShop Modern Fit Suit Jacket & Vest Review 

So, now that we’re planning our wedding, I wanted to avoid renting. However, Ryan wasn’t too keen on shopping in person. He much prefers shopping online. That felt a bit risky, until I came across SuitShop.com. Suit Shop offers risk-free purchasing of suits. They offer free shipping, exchanges and returns so you can purchase and return or exchange without any financial risk! 

The jacket and vest are from SuitShop. The rest of the outfit was already owned. 

Their website is really easy to browse. They offer a couple main styles of suits for men, plus a women’s suit style and a unisex suit fit. Fitted or more modern (which is more relaxed/casual) fits. Their size chart is easy to analyze once you’ve measured yourself or the person you’re buying a suit for. They have a generous range of sizes. Their modern fit suits have a wider range of sizes, but their slim fit is quite varied as well. The modern suit comes in sizes 34-64 for jackets, 28-58 for pant waist sizes, and short to extra long lengths. 

The pants come unhemmed so you will want to take them to a tailor to have them hemmed to your perfect length. 

You can purchase a “suit” for $199, which is the same price as renting! Their suits come with pants and a jacket, so you can pair with any dress shirt and tie that you own. If you want a vest, that will need to be purchased separately as well. 

I considered buying a suit set from SuitShop, but ultimately decided to buy pieces separately instead. Ryan already owned some black dress pants, so I thought getting the Black suit jacket and classic black suit vest would be a better use of the gift card. We bought both in black. Our wedding colors are all shades of purple, so the men are wearing varying purple ties and Ryan wanted to keep the rest of the suit really classic. We ordered the casual fit vest and casual jacket using Ryan’s measurements. The size chart served us well because both fit pretty well. 

At first, Ryan felt like the jacket was a little bit large, but we realized this was just because it is the modern fit rather than a slim fit like he has worn in the past. The quality of the vest and the jacket both feel on-par or superior to suits we’ve rented. I love that for a similar price we get to own these forever! 

SuitShop has a whole section for weddings where you can purchase suits for a whole group if you prefer to shop that way. 

Overall, we’ve been really pleased with our experience with SuitShop and would definitely recommend them to anyone looking to buy a high-quality suit online.
